Your Donation Saves Lives!
We count on your donations to continue our life-saving work. As a non-profit organization with no paid staff members, our dedicated volunteers work tirelessly on behalf of local animals. And our efforts are paying off. Our innovative programs have been credited with reducing the number of animals who are euthanized at our local animal control facility. Our dream is that one day, no adoptable animals will be killed in area shelters. We thank you for helping us realize this dream.Visit the donation page to see where your money goes.

New Update!  BJ is good with cats!

Introducing BJ!  He is a 3 year old neutered male beagle with pleasing ticked markings. He weighs about 29 pounds.  BJ was just taken into our Rescue Program where great dogs get some relief from the stress of a shelter and have a chance to show their true personality!

Report from BJ’s Foster Home:  Although shy in the shelter, within about 24 hours of him getting to our house, he was following my husband and I around, soliciting petting and belly rubs, wagging his tail, etc. Once he gets comfortable with you, he is VERY affectionate. He loves to cuddle and basically anytime you sit down on the floor or the sofa he wants to be in your lap. He does get scared more easily than the average dog, but he just needs time to adjust to new noises or people, and once he gets used to them he's fine. Also, there are some noises that he seems to already be used to-- for example, the first night he was at our house we watched a pretty loud action movie in our den and he slept peacefully through it on the sofa in my husband's lap while our dog, Lily, slept in mine; the sounds of the movie didn't bother him at all.

Speaking of our dog Lily, he's done very well with her. She has made it very clear that she's in charge at our house, and he's been very respectful of her boundaries. In terms of whether or not he needs to go to an adoptive home that already has another dog, I think it would be nice and would probably make his transition quicker. He does watch Lily for cues about things he finds scary; for example, the path that we usually take for walks goes under an overpass at one point, and you can hear the cars going by overhead. That freaked him out at first, but once he watched Lily walk under there and through to the other side like it was no big deal, he followed her. However, the next day I was able to get him to go under it just by verbal coaxing, though it did take longer. I don't think potential adopters would need to be immediately ruled out for him if they don't have another dog, but again, it might help with his confidence.

Young children are probably a no.   I don't have any concerns about him hurting a child-- he's very gentle-- but he is frightened by loud noises and sudden movements, which go hand in hand with young children and we want both Adopter and Dog to be happy and comfortable. I think he could be okay with older kids as long as they are understanding about the need not to scare him, even unintentionally. And I think he could potentially be okay with a young couple who might have children in the future; he just needs to be able to get used to things gradually, and getting used to his home and then potentially introducing a baby later down the line, who of course wouldn't be ambulatory at first, would allow him to do that.

BJ appears to be housetrained and is well-behaved in the house.  Hasn't shown any interest in chewing anything -- we often have shoes, computer cords, etc. lying around and he has completely ignored them all.  He’s not a jumper --doesn’t get on the kitchen counters or table but then again we are in the Honeymoon phase and he is a beagle after all!  So adopters should use common sense and not offer up too much temptation!

Ultimately, he is a SUPER SWEET, super affectionate dog who just needs an adopter who will be patient and gentle with him and understand that he needs time to get used to new things.  A fenced yard is a huge plus, since again, he is a beagle.  Other pluses would be experience with fearful dogs, or having another friendly dog who could show BJ the ropes so to speak but right now neither are absolute requirements.

BJ is heartworm negative, on prevention, vaccinated, and microchipped.
