Your Donation Saves Lives!
We count on your donations to continue our life-saving work. As a non-profit organization with no paid staff members, our dedicated volunteers work tirelessly on behalf of local animals. And our efforts are paying off. Our innovative programs have been credited with reducing the number of animals who are euthanized at our local animal control facility. Our dream is that one day, no adoptable animals will be killed in area shelters. We thank you for helping us realize this dream.Visit the donation page to see where your money goes.

SuccessKrysta

Hi I just wanted to give you all an update on my baby. Krysta is doing fine! Her favorite toys right now are rod toys with feathers or strings attached. She'll drag them around the apt and then bring them right to me and meow at me till I play with her. She is so smart. She knows how to do some tricks, when it's treat time. She can sit, stand on her hind legs and meow on command. That is if there is a treat in my hand. lol. Krysta still takes care of me during the day. I will be having surgery soon to fix my arm from the car accident on June 4th. So she will be my support, besides my husband lol. Krysta is one of the most trusting cats I have ever met. She will let me brush her teeth and cut her claws with only me holding her. One of her favorite things is for me to pick her up and rock her like a baby, she'll start to purr. lol. Granted my baby has a devil side. In the mornings she runs around the apt like she's possessed, and meow. She loves to climb and claw our bow-flex. I don't mind, I bought it for my husband, he never uses it, so I always joke that at least some one uses it.

I'm sending some funny pics of Krysta and I thank you again for my baby, we are moving to a bigger place in April and we are going to get her a play mate! So we may be coming by soon! :D

Thank you again for Krysta!

COOPER with his new mom and dad, Brenna and Dave

We adopted Cooper one year ago. We had been looking to adopt a small-ish adult dog, and checked the site regularly to see if there were any in the shelter that would fit us well. We saw a picture of Cooper, and had to meet him. As soon as we saw him in person, we knew we had to bring him home and make him part of our family. After a few weeks of visiting him at his foster home and bringing him to our house for “day trips” he was finally home with us for good! He’s been such an adventure for both of us. Of course, he has a maddening habit of taking up too much room in the bed or making “that face” when he wants something, especially garlic bread.

Coop’s fantastic with company, lives for a good head-scratching session or a ride in the car, and “sits” and “shakes” like a pro! (We’re still working on “lay”) Everyone loves his coloring and personality, and he gets along famously with my sister’s mini-pinscher Gracie, and the English Bulldog Delilah that belongs to our neighbor whenever they come to visit.

We’re very grateful that Ann with Animal Advocates took a chance on us, being first-time dog owners, and that she was there to take my panicked phone calls when something would go awry (like the early morning that Coop ran full-speed, head-first into the sliding glass door – he WALKS up to the door now to make sure it’s open before running inside), even contacting the vet and following up with us to make sure he was okay. He was obviously a big hit with the volunteers and workers at the foster home, who are always very happy to see him when he comes back for boarding or grooming. One volunteer in particular, Ian, has been to our home several times to visit and take Coop out to play for an afternoon. You guys do such good work, and if we decide to expand our little family, we’ll be back to see you.

Cooper came home with us from the shelter as a skinny little stray. Now he’s all love and muscle. We can’t imagine his previous owners letting him go and not scouring the earth to find him, and we can’t imagine not having him in our lives.

Thanks so much!
Brenna & Dave

SuccessCleoIsis
I know that you're busy trying to find homes for the animals at your facility but someone told me that you might appreciate receiving a note about my success in adopting two cats from your facility in September of 2005.

After my 13 year old cat had to be euthanized due to a brain tumor I was pretty sure that I didn't want another animal. A month later I visited your facility to have a look at the kittens. As it turned out, I fell in love with one six month old cat and knew immediately that I wanted her. Then, as I was making friends with her, I felt a paw "batting" my security badge so I bent down to have a look and, alas, fell in love with that six month old as well.

Needless to say I adopted both of them. Their names are "Isis" and "Cleo." ("Cleo used to be "Daisy" but I changed her name.)

Both are healthy, happy and a pure joy to have. -Debbie G.

Please don't overlook the strays. People tend to shy away from strays, feeling there is "something wrong with them" or their "history is unknown". There is no difference in the adoptability of strays versus given up pets. Often, strays are even happier to have a home, and spend less time missing their "owners". And remember, when considering pets who've been given up, the person giving them up has failed them. They may give erroneous information, skewed in a postive direction to relieve their guilt, or skewed in a negative direction for the same reason--it must be the pet's fault, not theirs. Let your instincts, as well as the staff and volunteers at the shelter guide you to make a good decision.

We just wanted you all to know how much we are enjoying our new cat, Dasher. We adopted him from you in the early part of this month, and he has adjusted beautifully to our home. He is so sweet and playful, and we are grateful that someone picked him up as a stray. Thanks for all you do.

SuccessAbby
A little over a year ago I had to let go of my wonderful 4 legged friend and have him put down. I had adopted him from the Forestville Shelter over 15 years ago and it turned out to be one of the best choices I had ever made. So when it came time for me to find a new companion I, of course, turned to my local shelters.

I ended up finding a super active and high strung young pup who was definitely labeled as a handful, but what a personality!! So last February I adopted her from the Howard County facility and named her Abby. Here it is almost a whole year later and it seems like it was just yesterday since I brought her home. She has yet to calm down, but that’s Ok since she’s also the biggest cuddle bug I’ve ever known.

I realized that it will be year since I adopted her and I don’t think I’ve ever come back to say thank you for doing everything that you do for these dogs. If you didn’t, Abby may still have been on streets and either hit by a car or walking around in pain from her condition. She is such a joy for me to have in my life and there’s nothing better than waking up in the morning to a fuzzy little snuggly pup under my covers. Again thank you for all that you do and for allowing me the opportunity have Abby in my life. She and I will always be grateful!!!

SuccessGriffin
Its hard to believe its been 5 mos now that we have had Griffin (formerly known as Reckless). We completed an 8 week puppy course with him which was very valuable and helped us teach him some manners and basic instructions. He can sit, lay down, stay, come, shake, high five and roll over on command! He is also getting very big.

He is now about 8 mos old and weighs 66lbs. He is very tall and lanky! Not sure what he is mixed with but several people, including our puppy school trainer suggested great dane! Not quite the medium mix we were bargaining for but we love him so much!

Take care, Shannon P. and Joe P.

SuccessSammy
Hi! Thought everyone at the animal shelter might like seeing pictures of Sammy, whom we adopted two weeks ago. He's doing great, and we're so happy to have him with us. Here's a picture of Sammy and his "big sister" Maggie. Thanks so much again to all of you who helped us adopt each of them.

SuccessTierra

Hi, Please let the folks at the shelter know that "Genie" (now "Tierra") - the Calico "kitty ball" on the right - has adapted amazingly well to her new home. She loves everyone (our old cat, dog, kids, visitors, and oh, yeah - us!).

Everyone is so impressed by her beauty and outgoing, calm personality. They just can't understand how such a remarkable animal could "wind up at the animal shelter". As we all know, LOTS of remarkable animals wind up at the shelter. Fortunately for the ones in Howard County, most of those find their forever homes once they get there. Keep up the good work!
